‘C’ Troop 1st Airborne Reconnaissance Sqn
C Troop, of the 1st Airborne Reconnaissance Squadron, 1st Airborne Division, took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Operation Market Garden in September 1944. They had previously fought in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. The Squadron had arrived in Holland by both parachute and glider, along with just over half of the airborne division, on Sunday 17 September, the first day of the operation, and was ready to depart from Renkum Heath by 15:40 hrs. They had been ordered to advance straight to Arnhem in their Jeeps and secure both ends of Arnhem Bridge until the Parachute Battalions arrived on foot. The Squadron's Jeeps had made good progress, with C Troop in the lead, but it was ambushed by men from 16th SS Panzer Grenadier Battalion when Lt Bucknall's Section was spearheading the drive to Arnhem. And thus began the Battle of Arnhem for the Officers and Men of the 1st Airborne Reconnaissance Squadron. C Troop Re-enactment honours the memory of the men who gave there lives during the Battle of Arnhem/Oosterbeek.If you are interested in joining the Group as a new member please Private Message us and one of the Team will get back to you. **Disclaimer** The members of the group do not claim to be or have been members of the British Forces.
