Exhibition about the role Woodhall Spa played in the battle for Arnhem. An action in WW2 immortalised in the film ‘A Bridge Too Far‘. Based here, in Woodhall, was the Airlanding Brigade which fought at Arnhem. This Brigade went into battle using gliders landing close to the Dutch town. The Brigade was based in hutted camps just to the east of Woodhall with the headquarters of the units that comprised the force utilising hotels and large houses within Woodhall itself. The exhibition tells the story of the units and men of this Brigade and their time here in Woodhall.
Three regiments of the first airborne division were based here in Woodhall prior to Arnhem. They were:- The South Staffordshire Regiment, the Border Regiment and the Kings Own Scottish borderers. Most of them did their parachute jump training here and many of them left Woodhall Spa, never to return. There was also a Polish para brigade stationed here.
Although the Operation overall did not succeed there were numerous examples of bravery in the extreme exhibited by our troops during this battle in September 1944. There were 4 Victoria crosses, awarded for gallantry and numerous other honours such as the MC (Military Cross) etc.
Tea, coffee and light refreshments provided at the hall for the weekend.
